US coins are the most popular. They were the first to be produced commercially, and we have the earliest minted copies of US coins in the market, more than any other variety. UK coins were also printed very early – as early as 1910. French double sided coins from before World War One are highly collectible.
Australian coins were usually not far behind UK ones, as were New Zealand coins. Often, people would simply use a british coin for tricks, as the coins were so similar.
Another variation is to buy some ‘exotic’ double sided coin for dramatic effect. This is usually an Asian coin – a Chinese or a Japanese coin is usually used – but at times African or South American coins have been substituted. There is at least one example of Romanian (Gypsy) coins on the market. This acts as a distraction – as you can say the coin (via its history) is magic, and always comes up heads (or tails). Make sure you have an unaltered coin to palm – as a viewer will want to examine it most often.
